Previous FBI head James the ex-FBI chief has pleaded not guilty to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and impeding a legislative process.

The former director's lawyer submitted the plea representing him in a national courtroom in the Virginia city of Alexandria on mid-week.

Patrick Fitzgerald stated he would attempt to have the case thrown out for various causes including that his defendant, a critic of former President Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was formally accused just days after Donald Trump pressured his attorney general to proceed against him.

Legal Proceedings

In court on Wednesday, his attorney Mr Fitzgerald advised the judge they aimed to submit several legal requests to dismiss the proceedings before a court case, claiming the government's case was vindictive and that a government lawyer was improperly appointed to handle the proceedings.

The former director's case was initially handled by a Virginia prosecutor, who stepped down under scrutiny from Trump after his examination into an additional opponent - New York Attorney General Letitia James - failed to file indictments.

Courtroom Atmosphere

The former director seemed in good spirits as he walked into the courtroom on mid-week, conversing with his lawyers and sharing humor. He was joined by his spouse, his wife and daughter Maureen, a US lawyer who the Trump administration terminated.

Following the reading to the court recite his legal protections and the two counts against him in court on Wednesday, the defendant was questioned if he grasped the allegations.

"Absolutely your honour. Appreciate it," he stated to the proceedings.

Background Context

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from four years and was dismissed about a few months into the former president's first term as national leader. At the time, he was leading an probe into international campaign influence and whether there were any relationships between Russia and the presidential campaign.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey caused a backlash from Democrats when he declared just days before the 2016 election that he was examining presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's use of a personal email system. Charges against Clinton were not pursued, resulting in disapproval from Republicans as well.

Present Charges

The federal government allege Mr Comey provided false information to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in recent years when he was being questioned about both the email probe as well as the Russia election probe. They say he deceived the upper house by claiming he had not permitted an individual at the agency to disclose to media organizations data about the government examinations.

Legal representatives also allege James Comey of "corruptly endeavoring to sway, block and slow" the legislative group by providing untrue information to it.

Personal Comments

In a video James Comey shared to his Instagram after he was charged, he said he was wrongly accused and accused the former president of conducting himself like a "dictator".

"My family and I have known for considerable time that there are ramifications to challenging the former president," he said. "We choose not to live on our knees."
"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a legal proceeding."

These allegations against James Comey emerged after Donald Trump published on online platforms calling for his attorney general, Pam Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and other people.
